Window Vista

Lenovo claims that Window 7 will boot up to 56% faster compared to XP and vista when installed in their own ThinkPad and ThinkCentre products. At the same time the IdeaPad and the IdeaCentre series will experience a speed improvement of around 33% faster during boot up and 50% faster during shut down.

According to the Computerworld interview with Howard Locker, Locker stated that “"we went from a one-minute boot-up to 30 seconds, and took shutdown from 20 seconds down to 10."

The dramatic speed improvement is contributed from:

  • Fixing driver of hardware components that were causing huge latencies and resource intensive.
  • Tweaking to the BIOS to hide some device during boot up.
  • Tweaking Window 7 to delay the start-up some nonessential services.

Very excited to see the news as I am a Lenovo Thinkpad user myself. Hopefully the tweaks and the new drivers will be available for download on the Lenovo website for older models.

It looks like I have being wrong in my last post about Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) about when the final version is going to get released. Apparently Microsoft is going to release the final version of Security Essentials later today. YES!! 29th  of September 09.

Like I said in my other post

Microsoft Security Essential received many positive wraps and rightly so with the simple UI, low memory/CPU usage and much better detection rate.

You should try it out if you haven’t, Microsoft got it right this time round.

I will post again when MSE does get released later today but most likely it will be from its homepage (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials).

Ever wanted to copy a number of large files from a folder to another folder or flash drive? Ever got really frustrated when the copy operation stops half way and you would have to start again? Well your not alone, I experience these sort of problems at least twice a week before I came across TeraCopy.

TeraCopy is a free program that is aimed to provide a better copy/move file handler to the inbuilt Window tool. Windows inbuilt copy handler is no where near where it should be. The inbuilt UI doesn’t provide us with enough feedback on what is being copied or how fast is copying at.

TeraCopy speeds up the file transfer rate significantly by using a dynamic adjusted buffer to reduce seek time. TeraCopy is support on all Windows platforms (XP/Vista/7) and it completely replaces Window’s inbuilt transfer tool without destroying your standard workflow. TeraCopy also allows you to view all the files your are transferring now and if one of the files fails, the transfer operation doesn’t stop entirely (It just stops for that file).

TeraCopy is a must have program for anyone who is does a lot of file transfer on their Window machine.
